Review GSM phone Neonode N1m

Remember that the Neonode N1? Surely we do, because it was one of the most exclusive phone when it was announced, something like the iPhone at the end of last year. The N1 was a small but powerful multimedia device with touchscreen interface strange and only a few hardware buttons. Unfortunately, I appeared on the market (in small amounts) years after that and was not very successful. In February 2007, the Swedish manufacturer has announced the second generation phone, the Neonode N2 are pleased to introduce here. It is based on the first one using the same operating system and has even smaller dimensions that allow you to be packed in transparent ultra small package that definitely looks as unique as the phone itself.

Package:

• headset

• SanDisk 1GB SD card

• Stereo Headphones

• charger

•             USB Cable

• Short Manual

Probably no more famous long-term device in the world that Neonode N1. Ago announced more than three years, has been discussed a lot, delighted, was forgotten for some time, I remembered again and again discussed.

Following the announcement that the device did not appear at the specified date, the interest was gradually reduced and the device became a ghost not intended to reach the shop counters in the eyes of the customer. The Swedish company attracted interest by recurring press releases. Thus, in 2003 the company issued a statement saying special press that a new release date and the device could go into the sale as far as possible not announced.

At the end of 2004, when the phone finally got the right to sell were few people who believed that the product was real and that reach the counters. However, a "counter" is rather relative - the device is free to ask only via the Internet and only in Europe, the full list of countries is available on the company website. The Commonwealth of Independent States form the exception, not the phone will be sold over the Internet, but less there since the summer.

Neonode Neonode N1m announced in the first quarter of 2005 - smartphones differs from the previous one in tri-band GSM instead of twice, the presence of a VibraCall, a megapixel camera, a new core Windows CE 5.0. This same version got into our hands for testing, so, share impressions.

At the time of the Neonode N1 it was only provided in the very early stage (2001-2002, most likely) technologies and systems for the time current operation prevented the creation of a miniature device with a touch screen. MS Smartphone 2002 prospects were quite hazy and also support a touch screen was absent. Series 60 platform also did not support her. And touch screen devices were too large, had some technical restrictions and were directed to work with a stylus that time. Something different, both in the technical sense and the necessary software for a miniature device with a touch screen that could work with a finger. And especially because of this the development process took so long.

Windows Compact Edition (Windows CE) operating system is a scaled down version of a desktop operating system (based on an old Windows NT with a seriously remade code) and also called built. As might have already guessed, it is intended for integration into various devices - refrigerators, cars, ATMs, various terminal devices. As we all see, there are no strict requirements from the end device, which can be a coffee-machine connected to the Internet. Windows Mobile (formerly - MS Pocket PC and MS Smartphone) base operating system in Windows CE kernel (the way the Nokia Series 60 It is based on Symbian OS kernel) but only have one user interface (Shell) and a library of different system. Some additional information can be found on a site Microsoft.

Windows CE core on which a personal interface developed by Neno was built, was chosen for Neonode. Thanks to a problem touchscreen operating at a close distance and control on the one hand resolved. On the other hand - the software is not compatible with Pocket PC and too little to go with Windows CE (some programs still running). That would be more logical to call the Neonode N1m a phone and the company positions itself in this way. But the current third party software, open and available software development program comes with a limited list of applications preinstalled does not allow a phone call. It's like a balance between a phone and a smartphone. Back to the question of software in a corresponding part.

The device has a body of black plastic that resembles Samsung D500 design (which is very rare). But that's a candybar but not a slider. No keyboard in motion and control is possible with a finger touches a sensory screen. The cheap plastic body and appearance, if not to say more. The plastic is soft but does not slide in one hand. The assembly quality is not showing any bad counterattacks.

The device is miniaturized and if you put on a credit card will close exactly.

It is shorter than a regular telephone average due to the absence of a keyboard, although it is wider and a little thicker. Between smartphones and communicators (look at the picture showing the device near the Palm Treo 650) with a touch screen Neonode N1m is unrivaled in size and weight (88x52x21 mm, forms of weight of 94 grams). That is the smallest felt light device in one hand.

The device fits both a man and be easy to hold the hand of a woman. Overall, the dimensions and shape are such that one can reach any point on the screen with his thumb.

A joystick 4D white is placed under the screen. Movement button is very hard and you have to get used to it. In many applications useless joystick is not working there. And any action with the interface can be committed without it. Although the joystick can be useful, for example, a Gameboy emulator. There are two small buttons to the left of the relatively large lever knob - A "tick" and a "cross" (to confirm and cancel). These buttons are rarely used when working with, especially a "cross" interface.

SD card slot is placed on the left side and a 1GB card included in the kit. When put into the card slot is not closed with a shutter, a corner always projects a couple of millimeters not make any discomfort but giving slightly less than the appearance of the device.

And a SIM card with a slot at the lower end projects a little too. The card is plugged out but the movement of the lock lever SD card to pull the same time. A mini USB output which serves for synchronization and load is also here.

We will also mention one (standard 2.5 mm) stereo output headset included in the kit especially for her mp3 quality is quite acceptable (for headphones in the kit, of course).

There is nothing at the top end. The speaker is placed on the rear panel and the camera. You would probably be surprised on the phone is talking to the outside of the screen. That's an unusual way to go down the street with a thought any passerby can look on your phone, look for the picture of a caller or number. You must get used to, or use the handset. There is another way, close the screen with the palm of the hand, since the dimensions allow it.
