Yoga and Ayurveda are two sister sciences that originated about the same time in the same place and are both famous in the 21st century for their natural and holistic healing processes. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translates to ayur, meaning “life” and veda, meaning “science”.  Ayurveda basically means the science of life.

For those who have no idea about how Ayurveda works, it is a practice of using natural herbs, plants, medicines, potions, techniques and massages, to heal your ailments and encourage holistic well being in a person. This is a very similar concept to yoga, where one practices many kinds of postures and meditation techniques to strengthen the powers of the mind and the body.

The works and words of Ayurveda and yoga can be found in the ancient Hindu scriptures called the Vedas.  There are 4 main Vedas which are further divided into sub Vedas. The four main Vedas are the Rig Veda, Sam Veda, Yajur Veda and the Atharva Veda. The practices of yoga can be found in the Rig Veda where as the practices of Ayurveda can be found in the Atharva Veda.

We may think that indulging in Ayurveda in daily life is a difficult task to do, but intentionally or un-intentionally, we have induced Ayurveda into our lives. The use of spices such as turmeric, cardamom, basil and bay leaves is used in everyday cooking; these herbs and spices are actually medicinal in nature, meaning that they have medicinal properties which are good for the health in a person. And in so many different and small ways we have incorporated Ayurveda in everyday lives knowingly or unknowingly.

Ayurveda in India is widely practiced; there are many renowned Ayurveda schools in India that offer Ayurvedic treatments and therapies. The state of Kerala is especially famous for its studies and research into Ayurveda. People flock in large numbers to receive their Ayurvedic treatment in Kerala, to be more specific, the Panchakarma treatment in Kerala.

But how does life with Ayurveda result in a healthy lifestyle?

An Ayurvedic lifestyle is a gradual process of being. One has to first understand the inner ideals and workings of this holistic practice to correctly involve it in their everyday lives. The basic knowledge of the three Doshas and how each Dosha operates in one’s body is a must. It teaches you some more about the functions of your body and its parts and how they work in combinations and synchronizations; than you would ever learn in any biology class.

This study of the practice makes you more self-aware and self-conscious about how to go about your well-being every day. Once you have done the study, you will also learn the amount of things and external forces that affect your mind and body and in what ways the affect is felt. With Ayurveda one learns the small steps and ways in which one can reverse or affect the body according to what they want to feel in the body and the mind.

Learning is the key:

If you are a quick learner, then you may gain a lot of data and information about the types of body structures and functions, the more you learn, the more you can have control over the functions of the mind and the body. This leads you towards a holistic approach towards your well being and you learn to maintain that well being for a long time period.

You will also learn that for ailments and illnesses that are deemed incurable, there are just about so many tweaks and alterations that can reverse the ailments or illnesses that one is facing, and this is what makes Ayurveda so famous. Even the ailments that modern doctors deemed incurable can be worked on with the practice of Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is a life science which came out of the wise brains and experiences of the old sages and saints of India. These sciences have proven and solid information and data about the ways to treat a certain ailment or an illness. So much so that even modern medical institutions are conducting deep researches on this practice and approving Ayurveda and its healing processes. It is truly a boon in the modern world which seems to run and function of the man-made, chemical pills and drugs that are mostly anesthetics and ways to distract the illness.
